I have no job and no money except enough to buy a Greyhound ticket to LA. I currently live in Arizona, where I am supported by my parents. I'm turning 18 in a month.|||ummmm, in 1850 the population of greater Los Angeles was 1,610 so the 17 million people (or their ancestors) who are here now made this same decision without any guarantees....borrow some money from your parents...if it doesn't work out you can always go back....seems like you have the time on your hands to give it a shot anyway....|||NO! You have received several good reasons why you should not move to Los Angeles from people here. Please listen to them.

Go into the military. We need young people who are motivated to do something with their lives. You will be able to save money for college; many actually go to college while in the service. At your age you can earn your A.A. degree first, for example. Get job training.

NB! You need to pass the entry exam, ASVAB for the military. EVERYTHING career wise is based on this, so I suggest you buy the prep books available in any bookstore. I've also included a link below if you want to take a short test to see how you would do and which careers you might qualify for.

There is a terrible job market out there and many people in California are homeless. Before moving there you need a job offer and a career. You will be able to save money while in the service.|||You'll end up homeless or in the adult entertainment industry or both if you come to L.A. with no job and no money. That's no way to start life at 18.

You're going to need at least $10,000 to $15,000 saved up to survive initially the first year.

Unemployment is high and it seems a lot and I mean, a lot of employers are not hiring. A lot of people have left the state. I know people who are skilled and educated and have been out of work a whole year and then some. A lot of companies started closing shop in California around 2004 and did major lay offs.

There's no such thing as cheap in major cities in California. You can't live on anything less than $15 to $20 per hour.

In a crummy area, count on $1,000 a month for a small studio or tiny 1 bedroom. No safety AT ALL guaranteed. Deposit, first month's and last month's rent will run on about $3,000 to $4,000 up front.

Underneath the ANSWER bar above type in WANT TO MOVE TO CALIFORNIA OR WANT TO MOVE TO LOS ANGELES and you'll see a lot of people asked that same question.

Here's what I can tell you:

Cost of living is super high. Everything is expensive.

You need a car to get around like everybody else:
Auto insurance downpayment is around $250 to $300 every six months and about $125 to 150 per month.
Electricity average for an apartment $70 a month.
Water, trash, etc. about $40 to $50.

Most everyone in LA are people who move here from out of state like you and they flood in here wanting to party and break into the entertainment business. I think its full of phonies.

BUt I have also visited Arizona and it sucks there too so I see your problem. What exactly do you expect to do when you get here without money? It is completely different from Arizona, LA is a huge city. You're going to need more than bus fare to get by.

Well, good luck.|||What are you searching for? Whatever it is, you certainly won't find it in Los Angeles. Stay in Arizona, go to college, and get a job. When you gain control of your life, then you can consider moving to Southern California. I recommend living along the beach or in a prosperous suburb.|||You want help? Real help? Here it is:

First: Stay where you are and deal with your issues there.
Second: Stop watching that crap on MTV. It's all fake.

Too many teens run out here to LA, thinking it's going to be like on TV. Especially the so-called "reality shows" on MTV. It's all lies. Know where the "Real World- Hollywood" house is? It's stage 20 at the Sunset-Gower studios in Hollywood.

Coming to Socal out of HS, you'll make minimum wage, which is currently $8 per hour. If you are lucky enough to get 40 hours per week, that's 320 per week, or $1280 gross per month. And that's BEFORE taxes. Take home is probably $910.

Now it's a hard economic fact that you should spend around 1/3 of your salary on rent or mortgage. One third of $910 is about $300, which is what you can afford.

However, the average rent for a studio/bachelor/single apartment is about $1000, and a 1BR is about $1200. In order to afford that, you need to make at least $3000 per month.

You know what happens to teens when they come out here? Many come here on the bus, with high hopes, some pocket money, no plan, and are doomed to failure. The Grayhound Bus depot downtown is the pimp and perv capital of the universe. Every day, runaways are "helped" by these people. They will give you a "free" place to stay, offer you some food, usually some pot or drugs, and all is well at first. Then you find out how "free" all that stuff is. They have you in their house, you have nowhere else to go, and that's how many runaways wind up as sex slaves. Somehow you never earn quite enough to pay your pimp, let alone enough to strike out on your own. Your pimp holds all "your" money for you. They just busted up a ring out in the valley, where dozens of teens were freed from virtual slavery. And frankly, those were the lucky ones. Too many wind up in the clutches of some sicko, lured by the promise of a free place to stay. Some get their 15 seconds of fame, on the 6:00 news. They're the ones covered up under the white sheet.

Seriously, if you want to come out here, you need to follow this plan:

-Stick it out where you are. Finish school.
-Get some experience and skills. Go to college, do internships, whatever. You'll need something to put on your resume.
-Save up $5000-$10,000. You'll need it for startup costs out there. A decent apartment in a decent neighborhood costs about $1200 per month. You'll need first and last month's rent, plus a security deposit, and money for meals, utilities, and transporation.

You want help? That's the best I can give you. You may THINK you have it bad there, and perhaps it is. But if you run away over here without the things you need to succeed here, it only gets worse.

Good luck.|||sure .. come to LA , might as well do like everyone else. It would help If others think you're hot.. IF you're kinky that would be a big Plus .. If your hot and kinky, you won the lotto.
Pay no attention to the posters that say you need a Degree or post "Let's do the math, shall we?" COME COME COME.
Your only downfall would be if you spoke English a first language, though.|||There are no jobs in LA. LA has one of the worst rates of unemployment in the country.

All you have to look forward to in LA is being a homeless person.

Co to college, even a community college and get some marketable skills. By then the recession will be over and there may be jobs here again.|||no. la is a frozen sewer. you will most likely be recruited into doing porn. thats what happends to all the niave teen girls who go to LA for no other reason than they have no money. its like , what? you think shits gona be cheaper over there? do all the bums im LA have it real easy? get real.|||if i were you, i'd save up money first, then try to get a job lined up in LA, and THEN do your move. You don't want to end up homeless in LA, and be picked up by your parents on the streets to fly back to Arizona.|||go to iowa... get a job and buy a house.... california is sooooo expensive and everyones losing there jobs right now... iowa has jobs and cheap cheap living!!!|||No. Stay in Arizona. Work and save your money. Then go.|||los angeles is a fun place.|||no its too crowded. It's really just like any old dirty city. Move to Del Mar|||If you want to end up homeless in LA...|||Stupid.
